Granaidh (Scot’s Gaelic for Granny)
returns after exhibiting with The Inverarity Gallery Monochrome Goddess Exhibition.
This painting is dedicated to my spirit animal, the Orca.
The monochrome palette inspired by their distinct black and white markings. Also noting the grey saddle patch just below the dorsal fin. The painting itself celebrates the matrilineal, female, family centric aspect of pod social structure.
Alongside us and with the exception of one other, female orca are the only species to experience menopause.
Each pod will have its matriarch and it is she who is the wisdom keeper. With lessons from the deep, Granny truly knows best. A goddess in her own right.
In my life before children I was a Marine Biologist. Spring of 92, I went to Canada to work, studying the environmental impact of traffic pollution on the Resident Orcas of Puget Sound. Also known as J, K and L pod.
Native Tribes People consider Orca to be their kin reincarnated.
I absolutely believe this, and from that day until forever, the Orca will remain my spirit animal.
My time on the island not only changed my life – it saved it.
Granaidh is also a nod to Granny, or J2, the southern resident orca estimated to be before her passing, the oldest surviving orca at approx.105 years old.
Mother to J1, himself a legend with a colossal dorsal fin of 6ft 2inch. I was fortunate enough to meet and spend time with both orca’s.
This painting is dedicated to that memory.
