"You said I would be nothing, but look, I'm really something
Many arms around the mast as your ship starts cracking
Will you see me through the pain?
Have you changed? So have I.
As I fix you in the gaze of my one and blinking eye
Do I terrify?
Do you see me now?"
-Kraken, Florence Welch
This contemporary original folk art painting is a nod to my love of naïve art, lore and the rich tradition of folk-art storytelling.
This dark design is inspired by my love for the grande dame witch, Florence + the Machine.
Her sublime lyric writing has always resonated but with the latest album, Everybody Scream, it was as if she reached in and squeezed my heart with both hands.
The recent revelation that over 150 years ago science discovered the Rette Orii, deemed it useless, then chose to not only forget but remove the organ from medical textbooks, sadly comes as no surprise.
The rete ovarii, is a horseshoe-shaped tissue situated at the bottom of the ovary, the organ consists of three distinct regions that persist from birth through to womanhood.
Scientists now believe the organ plays a major role in ovarian and fertility function, and that it may also communicate with immune, nervous and circulatory systems. They also found receptors for hormones including estrogen and progesterone. Additionally, proteins released by the rete ovarii are involved in egg maturation, maintaining ovarian follicles and responding to hormonal changes during the reproductive cycle.
Furthermore, for centuries, women we were told to hide and discard our menses. That menstruation was dirty and something to be ashamed of.
However, recent studies have shown that menstrual blood contains stem cells, that when compared to bone marrow cells, out perform them by a hundred to one. Tested against blood plasma found the menstrual cells healed an open wound in less than 24 hrs. Blood plasma healed less than half. The cells can also adjust, and transform into multiple cell types, including fat, nerve, cartilage and heart tissue.
Like Mother Earth herself, the female body offers infinite possibilities of renewal.
We a wealth of healing potential in the science of regenerative and neurological medicine, cartilage repair and gynecological treatments.
On the album, each song is a masterpiece but the Kraken with it's primordial beat stirred something in the deep.
Kraken; the sea-monster of Scandinavian folk lore, and in her lyrics, Florence embodies feminine fury and encourages us all to embrace the beast within.
There's more than iron flows in our veins, and they are right to fear our ferrous.
Using charcoal from neath the cauldron fire pit, handmade Rowan berry ink, burnt umber gouache, oil pastel and pencil, this dark design marries expressive mark-making with dramatic and distinctive details.
