Girl and Fox Fly-Fishing is inspired by childhood memories and of time spent with my Granda.
I was taught to step “into” the river. In order to catch a fish one must become. Standing hip deep, I learned to read water; feeling the pull and curl of the current. There is an alchemy to fly-casting; a four count rhythm; step-cast-wait, cast-wait, cast-wait, step-cast-wait. Ten o’clock, two o’clock. To watch was hypnotic; surely magic at work.
The tweak of a fly stirs primitive instinct. Fish takes! But one must quell the excitement. The trick now is knowing when to lift the line. Until the fish breaks the surface, one must rely on the senses to reel it in. This, more of a coax than a catch.
The fish is magnificent, stalwart in iridescent steel blue grey, its spots like full stops. Mostly, it was catch and release so to handle this noble creature was a gift.
As if holding time itself.
After his death, I did go alone, and while I was used to the silence, the absence of his presence was too much to take. But if you turn your face to the sun, the shadows fall behind you.
My heart; a river runs through it.
Wild Art is rich earth magic made deep in the heart of the forest. Created using the alchemy of my cast iron cauldron and botanicals grown and foraged here at An Taigh Dubh (Scot's Gaelic for The Black House) The layered papers are placed in the brew and boiled over an open flame.
I then wait to see what magic Mother Nature reveals of herself before putting watercolour, handcrafted inks and earth pigments to paper.
