This contemporary original folk art painting is a nod to my love of naïve art, lore and the rich tradition of folk-art storytelling.
This artwork is inspired by Pictish serpent symbols found etched on standing stones throughout Scotland. The North East of Scotland (my neck of the woods) being home to the largest number of Recumbent Stone Circles in the UK.
Be it the snake of wisdom or the sigil of second skin, Serpent is a potent artwork rich in magic symbolism.
Using charcoal from neath the cauldron fire pit, burnt umber gouache, oil pastel and pencil, this dark design marries expressive mark-making with dramatic and distinctive details.
